What are the barriers?
Kershaw County had the 15th- highest suicide rate among all 46 South Carolina counties in 2017. In 2016, 13% of adults reported 14 or more days per month of poor mental health (depression, stress or emotional problems). Some of the barriers to residents being mentally and emotionally well include:
Lack of knowledge of the county’s existing mental health programs, services, support groups and resources
Too proud, private or embarrassed to seek help; young people’s mindset of “It won’t happen to me”
Lack of access to affordable, quality mental health services
